Welcome to The Nest 2019-2020

Welcome to The Nest

We are very happy to have your child join us this year in The Nest! We have created a home-like atmosphere following Dr. Montessori’s principals of a prepared home environment. The children will contribute to the community by helping to care for the environment on a daily basis. We create a true sense of community through cooperative play, cooking and craft activities. The children may choose to participate in an individual or group activity. Many of the art materials, practical life activities and other items are available on the shelves for children to choose at any time. There will also be time for outdoor activities as well.

Snack

The Nest will provide snack in the afternoon for children staying past 3:15pm.

Lunch

Children will need to bring lunch with them on the days that they attend The Nest. Kindly send in a healthy lunch without sweets or sugary drinks in a labeled lunchbox. Please see Parent Handbook for details. We strive to be a nut-free and peanut-free school, so please do not send nuts or peanuts or food made with nuts or peanuts. The Nest will provide water at lunch time. If you would like your child to have milk, please send it in a thermos. Please do not send in food that needs to be microwaved.

Lunch in The Nest

Lunch is a wonderful time each day when the children in The Nest put their Practical Life lessons to use as they perform all the necessary tasks in setting the tables, taking out their food, eating politely, and performing all the cleanup chores.

We ask that parents pay special attention to food choices, utensils, containers for food, and choice of lunch box as you send your child off to school.  At The Cobb School we are always striving to provide opportunities for young children to develop independence. It is in this spirit that we request your partnership in support of the following recommendations for The Nest lunch.

  • Food Choices to Make with Your Child
    • A healthy lunch with a variety of nutritious foods from the different food groups. We strive to be a nut-free and peanut free school, so please do not send nuts or peanuts or food made with nuts or peanuts.
    • Please do not send sweets. This includes chocolate milk, juice, cookies, cake, candy, any type of gummy fruits or fruit roll-ups.
    • Please do not send processed snacks such as chips, etc.

We know that it can be challenging finding nutritious food that your child might like. However, it has been our experience that if all the children are bringing in healthy foods,  it is easier to develop the good habits of healthy eating.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you would like suggestions.

  • Please send warmed food in a thermos as we are unable to heat it. In addition, milk can be sent in a thermos.
  • Utensils, Containers, Lunchbox
    • Mealtime provides an opportunity for children to use their fine motor skills, thus helping them to become more independent. Sending lunch in containers that are easy to open allows them to do for themselves. Please practice opening and closing the containers with your child at home. Lunchboxes should be easy for your child to open. Please practice with your child at home.
    • We provide dishes, glassware and utensils to give your child the chance to practice eating politely and appropriately. Therefore, we ask you to refrain from sending foods in plastic tubes that are squirted directly into the mouth such as yogurt tubes, applesauce, etc.
  • Your child is old enough to help make his/her lunch. Children tend to enjoy the food more when they are involved in the process.
