Head of School Search
October 2, 2018
Dear Members of the Cobb School Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that the Board has voted unanimously to appoint Mrs. Susan Angelides as The Cobb School’s second Head of School, effective July 1, 2019. Susan currently serves as Head of School at Oak Grove Montessori in Mansfield, Connecticut, and will succeed Mary Lou Cobb, who has served for the past 45 years as Founder and Head of School.
Our Search Committee was charged with hiring a Head who would honor our AMI Montessori philosophy, mission, and core values ~ Respect, Responsibility, Independence and Integrity. We followed a multi-step search process, including reviewing inquiries from Montessori educators and current Heads of Schools. This resulted in two strong finalists who visited our campus. The Board is confident that Susan encompasses the leadership skills, passion and commitment to fulfill our mission and carry on Mary Lou’s vision to provide an authentic Montessori education.
A dedicated leader and builder of strong communities, Susan’s educational approach is deeply rooted in understanding and respecting the Montessori philosophy. Over the past seven years as Head of School at Oak Grove Montessori, Susan played an instrumental role in the growth and success of the school and led with a passion for and commitment to Montessori education. She currently serves as Vice President of the Board of the Montessori Schools of Connecticut, with founder Mary Lou Cobb, who is the current President.
Susan’s twenty-five year career has spanned both nonprofit and for-profit organizations. After graduating from the University of Rochester, she began her career in nonprofit work in Washington, DC. With a passion for promoting women in leaderships roles, she is an Advisory Board Member at the Institute for Women’s Leadership at Rutgers University and a women’s leadership trainer at Communicating with Clarity. Susan grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut, and attended Kingswood Oxford Middle School and The Loomis Chaffee School. She and her husband Michael are the proud parents of eight children, five of whom attended Oak Grove Montessori.
“I am honored to succeed Mary Lou Cobb’s incredible 45-year tenure as Head of The Cobb School,” Susan said. “Mary Lou has supported me in my career and served as my mentor. I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity to carry on her legacy and lead this close knit community as it continues to grow and meet the needs of children and families today.”
Mary Lou Cobb commented, “I welcome Susan Angelides to The Cobb School! I have known and worked with Susan through the Montessori Schools of Connecticut, and witnessed her strong work ethic first-hand. Running a Montessori school requires a strong leader with a deep commitment to the philosophy, and I am fully confident in Susan’s ability to lead our extraordinary community.”
Thank you to all who participated in our search process, with special thanks to our Search Committee, including co-chairs Mary Anne Creto and Jennifer Kulicki, for their dedication and leadership. Over the next few months, I hope you will join me in welcoming Susan to the Cobb School family, honoring Mary Lou’s tenure and celebrating our 45th Anniversary!
