What is the role of the Search Committee?

The Search Committee will oversee the Head of School search process. They will coordinate feedback from The Cobb School’s key constituents, including current parents, trustees, former parents, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni. The committee will work with the search firm to develop the Leadership Opportunity Statement for the Head of School position. They will review the initial round of candidate applications, select candidates to interview, conduct interviews of the semifinalists, and arrange campus visits for the finalists. Once the finalists have been identified, the Search Committee will recommend a final candidate to the Board of Trustees to serve as the next Head of School. The Board of Trustees will vote on this recommendation.

 

What is the role of the Trustees in the search process?

The Trustees are fiduciaries entrusted with legal responsibility for the long term success of The Cobb School, and as such, are responsible for hiring Cobb’s next Head of School. The members of the Board will have the opportunity to collaborate with Mary Seppala, our consultant from Educators’ Collaborative, during the meetings at school in May and throughout the process. The trustees will complete the Community Survey to assist Mary in developing the Head of School position description. The members of the Board will meet the finalist candidates of the Search Committee, and will ultimately select our next Head of School.

 

What is the role of the consultant in the search process?

Mary Seppala, our consultant from Educators’ Collaborative, will lead our community through the search process. Mary visited the Cobb School May 17th and 18th and met with Mary Lou Cobb, current parents, faculty, administration, former parents, alumni and trustees. Working closely with the Search Committee, Mary will translate the school’s mission, Montessori philosophy, school culture and goals into a Leadership Opportunity Statement. The position description includes the qualifications desired for an applicant to meet our criteria. Mary will interview, check references and provide background checks for all semifinalists. She will facilitate the school community’s meetings with the finalists and assist the Search Committee with their recommendation to the Board for the Head Elect.

 

What is the role of parents in the search process?

Current and past parents are invited to meet our consultant to provide feedback and complete the Community Survey. They will have the opportunity to meet the finalists when they are on campus in the fall. Four members of the Search Committee are current parents and four members of the Search Committee are former parents of Cobb School students. Their role is vital in the search process, as they are committed to Cobb’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, and Independence. They will work closely with our consultant, the Parent’s Association and Mary Lou Cobb to represent the voice of Cobb’s community.

What is the role of faculty, administrators and staff in the search process?

To ensure that the faculty and administration perspectives are represented in the search process, a member of Cobb’s Faculty and Administration will serve on the Search Committee. One is a Primary Teacher and the other is the Business Manager. They will both have some responsibilities to help communicate with the faculty and administration throughout the process. They will also provide feedback to our consultant throughout the process.
