Dear Members of The Cobb School Community,
It is with enormous gratitude for her 44 years of leadership that The Cobb School Board of Trustees accepts Mary Lou Cobb’s decision to step down as Head of School, effective June 30, 2019.
On behalf of the Board, we recognize Mary Lou’s incredible accomplishment as one of the longest standing founding Heads of School. Her vision of creating a Montessori school was inspired by the ideals and philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori and her training with the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). Mary Lou’s dream became a reality when she opened The Montessori Children’s House with only nine children in 1974. Today, The Cobb School is the culmination of Mary Lou’s vision and has become one of the premiere Montessori schools in our country.
Beyond the classroom, Mary Lou remains one of the most steadfast supporters of the Montessori movement. She was a founder of the Montessori Schools of Connecticut (MSC), the national Montessori Administrator’s Association (MAA), and the Montessori Training Center Northeast (MTCNE). She serves as President of MSC and is a board member of SPHERE, a consortium of Connecticut independent schools focused on diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness. She has also served as a commissioner on membership and accreditation for the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) for nearly 20 years.
As a teacher, leader, and Head of School, Mary Lou has dedicated herself to preparing children for life. She has been an inspiration for generations of families and a mentor for countless teachers and assistants in our community. The Cobb School embodies the ultimate prepared environment, and Mary Lou has instilled the core values true to her very own mission:
~ Believe, Guide, Step Aside, Let Fly ~
Mary Lou Cobb will forever be a most integral part of The Cobb School. In preparation for her transition and to ensure that our core values remain strong and steady, we have engaged the services of Educators Collaborative to identify the best candidate to become our next leader. In the coming weeks we will keep you informed about our search process.
We thank Mary Lou for her tremendous leadership of The Cobb School and for all she will continue to do over the next year as our beloved Founder and Head of School. We look forward to recognizing her life’s work and celebrating the 45th year of The Cobb School, Montessori.
