Here are a few of the questions that families frequently ask about Cobb School Montessori and the admissions process. If you don’t see your question here, please contact us.

What makes Cobb different from other schools or daycares?

Cobb School Montessori offers more than just childcare or academics — we provide a thoughtfully prepared environment where children are empowered to be curious, capable, and confident learners. Our classrooms are guided by trained Montessori educators who honor each child’s individuality and natural pace of development. With multi-age groupings, hands-on materials, and an emphasis on independence, students learn not only what to think, but how to think. Beyond the classroom, we foster a warm, inclusive community where families feel known and supported. For over 50 years, Cobb has been a place where children thrive — intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

How does the admissions process work and when should I apply?

We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year, but we encourage families to apply early, particularly for our Young Children’s Community and Primary programs, where space can be limited. The admissions process begins with a school tour and conversation with our admissions team. From there, families submit an application, and depending on the program level, we may schedule a classroom visit or a child observation. A first round of decisions is made in mid-December and a second round is made in early March.  After the March decision round, additional openings are filled on a rolling basis as openings become available. We aim to make the process personal, informative, and welcoming every step of the way.

What age should my child start at Cobb? Can they begin mid-year?

Children can join Cobb as early as 15 months old in our Young Children’s Community. Our Primary program (ages 3–6) is designed as a three-year cycle, and we recommend beginning at age 3 to get the full benefit of the experience. That said, we understand that families discover us at different times and we do accept mid-year applicants when space allows. For Elementary programs, we consider both academic and social readiness, and we’re happy to talk with you about the best time for your child to begin. No matter when they start, our goal is to help every child feel confident, supported, and at home.

How well do children transition to a traditional school after attending Cobb School Montessori?

It’s common for parents to wonder how children adjust after leaving a Montessori environment. The good news is that the habits and skills developed at Cobb serve students well for life, and especially in middle school, where independence and self-management become increasingly important.

Cobb Montessori graduates are typically adaptable, comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. They are practiced in managing their time, making thoughtful decisions, and approaching challenges with a problem-solving mindset – all essential qualities for navigating the more structured and demanding academic environment of middle school.

Because Montessori classrooms emphasize respectful communication, active listening, and the sharing of ideas, students are also well-prepared to advocate for themselves, participate in class discussions, and form healthy peer relationships. These foundational strengths help them transition smoothly and thrive in new settings, both socially and academically.

Does my child require previous Montessori experience?

Previous Montessori experience is not necessary for admission to any of our school programs. It is recommended for children who are 4 and older, but it is not always necessary. In all admission decisions, we carefully consider each child’s unique background before determining admission and placement.

How many students are enrolled at Cobb School Montessori?

Enrollment varies year to year, but Cobb School Montessori typically serves around 175 students ranging in age from 1.5 -12 years (6th grade).

Does Cobb School have current space available?

Each year we accept new students into our Young Children’s Community and Primary Program, as well as a limited number of openings in our Elementary program. Spaces fill up quickly and we recommend applying early. Please inquire for the most up-to-date information.
